Music Reflection for Good Friday - Breaking Bread Hymnal Book

Good Friday invites us into the depth of Christ’s suffering, love, and surrender. In the Responsorial Psalm, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit,” we echo the total trust of Jesus, who entrusts everything, even His final breath, into the Father’s mercy.

The Gospel acclamation reminds us that Christ’s obedience was complete, even unto death on a cross. Yet in this suffering lies the mystery of glory: through humility and sacrifice, God exalts Him above all.

As we sing Behold the Wood by Dan Schutte, we are called not just to look upon the Cross, but to recognize it as the throne of love where our salvation was won. In Wood of the Cross by Owen Alstott, we receive Christ in Holy Communion, uniting ourselves with His sacrifice, the very wood that bore our redemption now becomes our source of life.

Finally, in the haunting strains of Were You There, we are personally drawn into the Passion. It is no longer just a story of the past, it becomes our story, our sin, and our salvation. We stand at the foot of the Cross, humbled and grateful.

May our music today not only be sung, but deeply lived, leading us into silence, reverence, and a renewed love for the One who gave everything for us.

Christ became obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every other name.
